There are some people who seem to leave the house every morning carrying half their lives with them.
Teachers are definitely among them.
Pens. Markers. Scissors. Sticky notes. Keys. Phone. ID badge. A handful of something-or-other that a student needs right now. Maybe a roll of stickers. Maybe a tiny pair of scissors. Maybe a classroom timer. And somehow, there is always one more thing that needs to be carried from one side of the classroom to the other.
Teachers spend surprisingly little of their day simply sitting at their desks.
They are helping one student, checking on another, moving around the classroom, working with small groups, demonstrating something, answering questions, finding supplies, and keeping an eye on everything happening around them.
And that's where a good teacher apron can become so much more than just a place to put your pens.
Keeping the little things close at hand
When I first started making my multi-pocket aprons, I was thinking about practicality: How can I make an apron that gives someone enough pockets to actually be useful?
Over the years, I've heard from customers who use them for all sorts of jobs—teachers, vendors, gardeners, artists, servers, photographers, and crafters. But teachers are especially well suited to this style of apron because they spend so much of their day on the move.
My multi-pocket half aprons have several roomy pockets for the things you need frequently, along with a secure zipper compartment for items you'd rather not leave in an open pocket. The large center pocket is even roomy enough to hold a Kindle or iPad upright, which can be particularly handy for teachers who use a device while working with students.
Instead of making another trip across the room for your phone, a pen, or a marker, it's right there with you.
And sometimes, that little bit of convenience makes a surprisingly big difference in a busy day.
Six pockets can hold a lot of teacher life.
One of my favorite things about making these aprons is imagining what will eventually find its way into all those pockets.
I suspect every teacher has their own system.
One pocket might be reserved for pens.
Another might hold markers.
The big center pocket could be home to a phone, small notebook, or classroom supplies.
The zipper compartment gives you a safe place for something you don't want slipping out while you're bending, reaching, or moving around.
And then there is always that mysterious pocket that somehow ends up holding something you don't remember putting there.
That's part of the charm of a good pocket apron.
It becomes part of your routine.
You stop thinking about where your things are because you know exactly where they are.
An apron that works as hard as you do
I make my multi-pocket aprons in two sizes because one size doesn't work for everybody. They're made to order, rather than produced by the hundreds and sitting in a warehouse waiting for someone to buy them.
And because I make each one myself, I get to pay attention to the little details that aren't always obvious when you first look at an apron.
The sections are fully lined. The seams are topstitched for additional strength and durability, and there aren't exposed raw edges inside the apron. These are details you might not notice in a photograph—but they're the kinds of details I think about while I'm sitting at my sewing machine making your apron.
After more than 30 years of sewing professionally, I've learned that the little details matter.
Especially when something is going to be worn and used over and over again.
And then there's the fabric
This is the part that makes my aprons different from one another.
I don't want every teacher to have to wear the same apron.
Some teachers might choose a cheerful alphabet print. Others might fall in love with strawberries, flowers, apples, or something completely unexpected. I have also used many fabrics that are out of print, which means that once my supply is gone, I may not be able to make that particular apron again.
That's one of the things I love about handmade.
Your apron doesn't have to look like everyone else's.
